Transform your life

- one night at a time

"What are you doing this weekend?" "Catching up on sleep..."

How many times has a friend or coworker said this to you? Being sleep-deprived during the week and then catching up on the weekend is almost a global phenomenon now. When did it become so normalized not to sleep enough?

In older days, humans would rise and rest with the sunrise and sunset. But since the invention of electricity, we can now rest and play basically anytime of day that we want. But this can take tolls on our sleeping life.

Not getting enough sleep has profound consequences on our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. It sometimes feels like we can never truly disconnect. Millions of people across the world fall asleep and wake up to a glowing TV screen.

In her book The Sleep Revolution, author Ariana Huffington discusses what she calls our current "sleep deprivation crisis". She calls on us to make sleep a PRIORITY and describes sleep as β€œthis ancient, essential, and mysterious phenomenon”. Since the magic formula of falling asleep and getting a restful night is different for everyone - there's no "universal recipe" - each one of us must commit to our own Sleep Revolution and to the process of trying different tools and techniques in order to determine which ones are useful in falling asleep promptly and getting a proper night's sleep.

As part of this, Huffington calls on us to rethink how we describe success. Does it have to be based on how much or how long you work? Does pulling an all-nighter have to be impressive? Huffington learned the hard way what happens when you repeatedly deprive yourself of sleep. Sleep deprivation translates into β€œhigher levels of the stress hormone cortisol the next day”. This represents the β€˜new normal’ for many of us. But it should warn us of the bigger danger lying ahead: burnout.

Huffington suggests five actionable steps we can take now:

  • Spend your free time wisely; i.e. prioritize sleeping above watching the latest episode of your favorite series

  • Be indulgent. Support yourself. If you sleep in, don't chastise.

  • Eliminate sleep as a punishment for children

  • Try not to use alarms

  • Don't use electronic devices at least half an hour before bed; in fact, try to keep them out of the bedroom completely!
