Positive affirmations are positive statements that describe a desired situation or goal.

“An affirmation is really anything you say or think. A lot of what we normally say and think is quite negative and doesn’t create good experiences for us. An affirmation can be a powerful tool. Think of a positive statement that describes one of your desired situations or goals. For example, if you are frustrated with yourself for getting nervous and anxious in situations where you would do better to keep your cool, you might choose the affirmation, "I am calm and relaxed in every situation."

Then, repeat this statement often, during situations when you are not doing something that requires much attention, in order to impress it on your subconscious mind. For example, during your daily commute if you are not driving is a good idea, or if you're waiting in line for a coffee.

The act of repeating the affirmations, motivates, inspires, and programs the mind to act according to the repeated words. This repetition helps focus your whole mind on your goal and create relevant mental images within your conscious mind, which then positively influences your subconscious mind and aligns it with your goal.

An affirmation can work because it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept. This is because the mind doesn't know the difference between what is real or fantasy; for example, when you watch a movie and you start to laugh or cry your mind is empathizing with the characters on the screen even though it is only Hollywood magic.

Be aware of if you slip into a negative thought pattern throughout your day; simply repeating positive affirmations for a few minutes but then thinking negatively for several hours will neutralize any potential effect of the affirmations. And remember all of your self-talk + internal dialogue, is a stream of affirmations that is creating your life experiences with every word and thought. So make them positive affirmations.

It's as simple as "Think Happy Thoughts". It sounds hard but it is achievable and is a choice, because how you choose to think, right now, is exactly that-a choice. And when you choose positive affirmations over negative ones, you are choosing to change your thinking. You won't change your life overnight but if you consistently choose positive over negative, you'll start seeing the benefits in every area of your life. Plus, positive affirmations help motivate people around you and lift everyone up together, which will in turn transform you and your energy.

Plus, it's backed by science.

When you have a thought, your brain experiences a burst of neurochemicals which creates patterns between brain cells via synapses. The more you have a particular thought, the quicker + stronger the synapses will move along that message, and the emotions you attach to specific thoughts become more automatic and powerful the more often we repeat those thoughts.

So if you choose to make these thoughts positive affirmations, you can affect your brain’s natural processes to alter your perception of life. Research indicates that beliefs are not only thoughts we hold but are actual brain mechanisms mixed with emotions. The portion of our sensory information that reaches the higher levels of our processing is to some degree determined by our beliefs. Essentially, we can create a more positive belief system by intentionally inputting more positive thoughts into our minds.

So remember, even when you feel "stuck" in your emotions, you have an incredible biochemical tool at your disposal for positive change and growth.
